Protist 10,000 Genomes Project

Protists are a highly diverse group of microscopic eukaryotic organisms that are not fungi, animals, or plants. So far, the Protist is estimated to more 60,000 and 200,000 species, with many more still likely to be discovered. The Protist 10,000 Genomes (P10K) Project is the first big international genome sequencing initiative to focus on the kingdom of Protista. It will be carried out in three phases that will cover 85% classes, 60% orders and 30% families of protists, respectively. The final aim is to obtain genome information for ~10,000 species of protists through de novo sequencing combined with metagenomic data-mining. The P10K Project is an open initiative, and collaborators are welcome to join.

Objectives

To construct the pylogenomic tree of protists; to discuss the relationship among protists and the diversity mechanism of protists.
To provide the clues and evidences to the origin/evolution of eukaryotes, organellers and sexual reproduction; to explore the mechanism of adaptation to extreme environments and symbiotic relationships.
To study the causative mechanisms for algal blooms and disease; to support ecological risk assessments, disease prevention, and policy decision-making.
To mine the bio-resources and genomic resources related to pollution control, biofuels, aquatic bait, medicines, and nutrition; to build the biological resource center and genomic database of protists.
