The “PAKISTAN-CHINA GENOMICS WORKSHOP” was held at National Center for Bioinformatics (NCB), Quaid-I-Azam University (QAU), Islamabad from July 17th till July 19th, 2018. A delegate of five people from Beijing Institute of Genomics (BIG) lead by Prof. Dr. Yiming Bao (Director of BIG Data Center in BIG) conducted this workshop, and gave talks and hands-on training on “big data sharing”, “database classification and retrieval”, “genome sequencing and analysis”. Around a hundred participants registered from different institutes of Islamabad including National University of Science and Technology (NUST), COMSATS University Islamabad (CUI), International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI) and Pir Mehr Ali Shah (PMAS) Arid Agriculture University, Rawalpindi.

The BIG delegate also held meetings with Drs Muhammad Latif and Wasim S. Hashmi Syed of Higher Education Commission (HEC), and president of COMSTECH Dr. Qasim Jan to discuss the possibilities of carrying out research activities between Pakistan and China. This workshop was supported by the “Global Omic Data Sharing Project” (funded by the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People's Republic of China), which was jointly applied by BIG and QAU. Since the launch of the project, the two sides have had frequent exchanges of visits and signed the MoU. BIG and QAU have cooperated on biological data curation, software development, chloroplast genome sequencing, and data sharing. The success of this workshop will further promote the cooperation and exchanges between BIG and QAU, and also lay a good foundation for cooperation with other “the Belt and Road” countries and regions. During their stay in Pakistan, the delegate were warmly received by Mr Jia Wei, First Secretary of the Chinese Embassy in Pakistan.
