The fugu (Takifugu rubripes) genome is estimated to be 400 Mb in length, one of the smallest genomes known among vertebrates. The small size is primarily due to differences in repeated sequence content. The genome sequence is valuable for comparative and evolutionary studies because, although human and fugu lineages diverged over 450 million years ago, the vast majority of genes identified in human are believed to have a fugu counterpart.
