Description | Sweet potato is one of the most consumed root crops worldwide; however, its genetic origin, especially its tetraploid progenitor, is unclear. To investigate relationships between cultivated sweet potato and its wild relatives, we collected 23 sweet potato cultivars/landraces and all possible genetic donors of sweet potato, based on sweet potato T-DNA (IbT-DNA) screening. By genome-wide variation based phylogeny and novel haplotype-based phylogenetic analysis (HPA), we identified the closest tetraploid relative of sweet potato. We uncovered the biased exchanges between homoeologous chromosomes by HPA. Our analyses reveal that genes involved in storage root formation, sugar transport, stress resistance, and genome stability maintaining have been selected by nature or human from the tetraploid progenitor to cultivated sweet potato. Our work suggests that HPA may provide higher resolution in determining the genetic origin of complex polyploids. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
