Description |
Enduracidin, also known as enramycin, is a lipopeptide antibiotic produced by Streptomyces fungicidicus. It possesses a bactericidal activity against gram-positive bacteria, including a number of drug resistant Gram-positive pathogens such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). To increase enduracidin production, the transcriptional pattern of enduracidin biosynthesis gene cluster was analyzed and the expression level of each gene at different fermentation period was determined by the transcriptome analysis. One structural gene (endC) was identified from the enduracidin gene cluster, whose expression level was evidently lower than that of the other structural genes at enduracidin producing stages. The gene was identified to be the rate-limiting gene in enduracidin biosynthesis. Through enhancing the expression level of the specific rate-limiting gene (endC), the whole enduracidin titer was significantly improved. |
