Description Piao chicken, an important Chinese native breed, lacks primary tail structures, such as pygostyle, caudal vertebra, uropygial gland and tail feather. So far, the molecular mechanisms underlying tail absence of the breed have remained largely unclear. We employed comparative transcriptomic analyses of 21 RNA-Sequencing samples from different tail development stages, and comparative population genomics of 118 genomes, to unravel potential genetic underpinnings of rumplessness in Piao chicken.
